Justice Phil Johnson is a true conservative, who believes judges must be impartial referees and strictly interpret the law, not seek to write it from the bench.
–  Governor Rick Perry
As a former Justice on the Texas Supreme Court, the state of our judiciary is important to me. That is why we need Justice Phil Johnson re-elected to the high court. Phil Johnson believes, as I do, that our courts need judges who are qualified, experienced and committed to the rule of law, not judges who legislate from the bench.

Recommendations: Texas Supreme Court

September 29, 2008 | Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Place 8

Justice Phil Johnson was chief of the Seventh Court of Appeals in Amarillo when Gov. Rick Perry named him to the Supreme Court in 2005. Johnson, a Republican who’ll turn 64 in October, is seeking his first full high-court term.

Democrat Linda Yanez, 59, also comes from an appellate background; she’s been on the 13th Court of Appeals in Corpus Christi since 1993.

Yanez said she ran because there’s a perception among lawyers that the justices are opting to review cases “where they don’t want plaintiffs to get that money” that they’ve won during trials and she would “pull the discussion more to the middle.”

Johnson disagreed that the court goes out of its way to reverse juries. He said Texans want a system where they feel they can “simply take their case based on the facts” and have it decided fairly: “I take each case as it comes to me.”

The Star-Telegram recommends Phil Johnson for Texas Supreme Court Place 8.
